With Mother's Day fast approaching, I get a bit weepy reading all these sentimental articles about mom's cooking, and mom's best recipes, and cooking with mom, and memorable mom dinners. Here's the thing: my mom's specialty was Weaver's frozen chicken. She could actually "make" two things: gazpacho and cheesecake. And I don't really like cheesecake. And my mother-in-law could make mush out of anything. She cooked every food to death. My favorite story is when my husband and I were trying to convince his parents to eat more fresh vegetables instead of canned, and we told them to try some fresh snow peas. Later that week, his mom called and said the snow peas were good, but it took forever to get the little peas out of the pods. Perhaps we became foodies as a survival tactic. So go ahead, reminisce. But please, share those memories. Vicarious sentimentality is the best I can do.
